It's the end of an era. Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the country’s preeminent experts on COVID-19, announced today that he will step down after 38 years as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in December, as well as from his positions as chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden and chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Immunoregulation. In a statement, President Joe Biden praised Fauci for saving lives in the U.S. and abroad. “His commitment to the work is unwavering, and he does it with an unparalleled spirit, energy, and scientific integrity,” Biden said.
Fauci’s also been the target of political vitriol, especially among people who condemned his promotion of vaccines. Fauci was targeted with death threats and forced to use a bodyguard. However, he remained dedicated to his role, telling Alice last year, “If there is one challenge in your life you cannot walk away from, it is that most impactful pandemic in the last 102 years.” (Time)

The legacy of pandemic shutdowns has been felt all around the world in terms of lost learning, societal and mental health stress and teacher shortages. In America, the optimism that always accompanies a new school year is being fueled by a relaxing of Covid-19 precautions in many areas.
But US education is also facing multiple strains. The anxiety of three disrupted school years is still weighing on teachers. Lots of kids are suffering from an academic deficit due to school closings and online classes at the height of the pandemic, which they may struggle to close. The poorest kids suffered most, including those who lacked computers and internet access at home. In the most deprived areas of the US, schools are often the main source of food, mental health resources and basic supervision. Societal reverberations will be felt in many lives for years to come.
